French Lick, Indiana -- the home to the one and only Larry Bird!  Often referred to as Larry Legend, our hometown All-Star was legendary from an early age.  

Larry Bird, one of the most iconic figures in basketball history, has a deeply rooted connection to French Lick, Indiana, where he was born and raised. Referred to as the "Hick from French Lick."  Our small town is nestled in the southern part of the state played a pivotal role in shaping Bird's character and basketball career. Growing up in a humble household, Bird developed a strong work ethic and a competitive spirit from a young age, traits that would define his legendary career in the NBA.

French Lick provided the backdrop for Bird's formative years, where he honed his basketball skills on the makeshift courts of the town and in the local high school gym, Springs Valley.  Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial hardships and a sometimes difficult family life, Bird's passion for the game never wavered. He poured countless hours into perfecting his craft, often practicing late into the night under the glow of the gym lights.

It was in French Lick that Bird first caught the attention of coaches and scouts, showcasing his exceptional talent and basketball IQ. His standout performances at Springs Valley High School garnered national attention, leading to a scholarship offer from Indiana University. However, Bird's collegiate journey took a different path, and he ultimately chose to attend Indiana State University, where he would become a collegiate star and lead the Sycamores to the NCAA championship game in 1979.

Despite achieving fame and success on the national stage, Bird never forgot his roots in French Lick. Today, French Lick proudly celebrates its most famous native son, with tributes to Bird scattered throughout the town and a deep sense of pride in his accomplishments. Larry Bird's journey from the streets of French Lick to the pinnacle of basketball greatness is a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of a tight-knit community.
